Backyard wars

Digital tabletop RPG

Overview

  • Engine used: Unity

  • Genre: Tabletop RPG

  • Duration: 1 month

  • Year of production: 2017

  • Group Project

  • Role played: Game designer & Programmer

Intention:

As a designer I had to create different character classes in order to implement the tabletop RPG into a digital playable game. Different classes of humans, animals & robots were ideated with every class having 3 different characters and every character having different abilities. All of this had to be implemented in Unity.

Achievables:

Being the only programmer in the team, it was quite fun to implement all the design ideas and creating different character classes in Unity and giving them abilities and seeing the effect of that in the game. A lot of research also had to be done since this was a very basic RPG tabletop game but a new field of development for me.

Learning outcomes:

I learned a lot of stuff in terms of design & programming. How to design out character classes and how to create a synergy amongst different classes and have a balanced game design was done by trial and error over a lot of iterations. In terms of programming, Setting up a turn based digital RPG game and the research for it helped me learn a lot about development in such a field.
